Cornwall, Ontario – There was a lot of excitement at the NAV Centre on Saturday as the Innovation Task Force held their Hack to the Future event for tech enthusiasts. Local MPP Jim McDonell was in attendance and formally congratulated the SDC and Code Heroes Digital Programs on receiving a $75,000 Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to help with the Code Heroes program.
“The Social Development Council and Code Heroes are seeking to give our local youth the skills and confidence they will need in a continuously evolving job market,” said Jim McDonell, MPP for StormontDundas-South-Glengarry. “Educational institutions and governments across Canada have recognized the importance of teaching coding and other skills related to advanced computer use. Through this program, youth in Cornwall and area will be able to compete in a continuously evolving job market where strong computing skills are fast becoming a prerequisite for better pay and promotion. I commend the Ontario Trillium Foundation for supporting this important initiative and look forward to witnessing the program’s benefit to our community.”
The goal of Code Heroes is to embrace aspects of digital literacy not commonly taught in schools. Participants will have the opportunity to join classes, connect with local peers and keep pace with digital advancements. Funds from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will be used to help with staffing costs and to purchase 20 laptops. The Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Seed grant initiative awards grants that can run up to one year and enables organizations like SDC and Code Heroes to pilot initiatives in communities.
“We appreciate the huge opportunity this grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation has provided us in delivering digital programming to youths in Cornwall and area. We are excited to be able to show how kids can build, innovate, and be creative using digital tools in order to meet the growing demand for these skills in the workforce or the entrepreneurial space!” Said Kelly Bergeron the Founder of Code Heroes and the Director of Digital Programming with the SDC. “We are excited to partner with the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Code Heroes on this project, the innovative spirit and energy they bring to the table is a really amazing environment to work in and to be a part of” said Alex de Wit the Executive Director of the Social Development Council of Cornwall and Area.
